Creativity Boosters for WritersSimple and Fun Ways to Overcome Writer's Block
Tips writer's can use for overcoming writer's block and increasing creativity.
Ask any writer what their number one writing-based fear is and they are likely to answer "writer's block". When the pressure to produce copy becomes overwhelming, it sometimes gets difficult to cultivate fresh ideas and freshen up old ones. But writers of all genres can benefit from the inspiration-inducing activities suggested below. Not only will they get the writer's mind thinking in innovative ways, but is also fun in the process. Play a Game. Anything that gets the mind working and thinking in a problem-solving capacity is an excellent creativity booster. Whether it is video games, board games, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles or cards, games are a fun way to spark creativity. Be a Kid Again. Engaging in a favorite activity from childhood can promote a wellspring of new ideas. Think like a child, look at toys again with wonder and curiosity. Finger paint, Play-Doh, color, play catch or take a bike ride: all of these things can increase the natural flow of organic ideas. Try a Different Art Form. A great way for writers to re-charge their batteries is to dabble in another creative outlet. Painting, dancing, playing a musical instrument or snapping some photos encourages the brain to think outside the box and fosters creativity in unwritten ways. Learn a New Language. Writers sometimes become so immersed in their native language that it no longer sparks creativity. By learning a new language, the writer's brain is forced to slow itself down and think about words in a way that had previously been taken for granted. A secondary language allows the writer to once again appreciate the beauty in words. Prohibit Rules. Writing without rules is an easy way to get the words flowing again. Every writer has a nasty habit of self-censoring themselves when they write and this often leads to the repression of deeply profound ideas. In order for thoughts and words to flow and meet on the page, writers need to pay less attention to spelling, grammar, formatting, context and agreement and focus solely on what they want to say. Save the rules for editing time. Make an Inspiration Board. Inspiration boards are great tools for collecting random visual ideas for future use. Keep the board in a central location, and when writer's block strikes, consult the board for inspiration. Take a Fresh Look at the World. Creativity can be re-ignited by looking at something with fresh eyes. By viewing a favorite piece of art, watching a beloved film, or listening to inspiring music, a writer can be once again reminded of the different ways in which the world can be seen. A shift in perspective can often be the spark a writer needs to get ideas flowing. Writer's block no longer needs to be seen as an obstruction to productivity. It can embraced as something that comes along with the territory of writing and can be used as a justification to have some fun, or at the very least to stop and smell the roses.
