Everyone Has Creativity and ImaginationDream the Impossible and Unlock Doors to a Boundless World
Imagination is the forming of images or impressions of future situations or experiences. It is a powerful, often overlooked tool.
To write an in-depth article, be it the retelling of a local government meeting and the decisions and policies that were born from that meeting, coverage of the women’s NCAA championship game or the opening of a new urban restaurant in New York City’s Manhattan, the ability to see life through another person’s eyes is necessary. It is one of the single most effective ways to connect with readers. A Key to Effective CommunicationGood writing demands imagination. In the world of newspapers, magazines and websites, if a writer fails to engage her readers, her stories will not be widely read. As Stef Penny, author of the award winning book The Tenderness of Wolves said, “Just because you go somewhere it doesn't mean you have a peculiar or vivid or insightful take on the place. Any story takes place in the landscape of the imagination.” Imagination pushes phenomenal success into J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. It also helps to prevent writer's block. The ability to think outside the norm and open to new possibilities is the art of make believe. Unless one plans to write the same articles and stories time and again, they will need a healthy dose of unbridled creativity to enjoy a rewarding writing career. Unlock a World of DiscoveryAlbert Einstein said that, “the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” Great creators know that knowledge and intellect will launch their minds into the unknown but so far. It is imagination that extends into the realm of the impossible. Key components in imagination are courage, innovation, openness, no limits on thoughts, freedom from routine and acceptance. To exercise and strengthen one’s creative ability, one can go on an exploration by visiting new places, meeting new people, learning a new language, meditating or taking a walk outdoors. Everyone has a powerful tool at their disposal that they can use anytime they wish. That tool often reveals itself while a person is sleeping. It is called dreaming. Everyone can take parts of their dreams, a character or lesson learned and create a short story, novel or screenplay. As an added benefit, one might also find the answer to a real life question or conflict they’ve been experiencing while paying attention to their dreams. More Ways to Access CreativityOther ways that one can use their imagination to expand their writing portfolio can be found in the home. A writer can search his home and pick the first object, a picture frame or the rug beneath the kitchen sink and research and write an article about that item for a home magazine or the local newspaper. While taking a walk as the sun sets and the sky turns a burnt orange, it’s a good idea to carry a slip of paper and a pencil with. Pay attention to the first thought that enters one’s mind. Jot the thought down on the paper. That night create the first draft, completely non-edited, of a poem or short story that dives deeper inside the thought. Remember, imagination allows a writer to see an event, a fact or a possible happening from a different point of view, and if a writer acts on this openness they will find their writing portfolio growing as they arrive at fresh story ideas. Writers who explore new areas and regularly exercise their imagination will also find the bond between them and their readers’ strengthening. Over time, one just might land that big book deal.
