Pulitzer Prize Winner Anna Quindlen

The New York Journalist and Best-Selling Author

Anna Marie Quindlen has written. Some of what she has written earned her the Pulitzer Prize. Now she has a new book out.

Anna Quindlen’s career in journalism began in 1974 when she began writing for the New York Post. In 1995, she parted from journalism to write novels full time. By 1999, she went to work for Newsweek to write a bi-weekly column. In May of 2009, she announced her “semi-retirement.”

Anna Quindlen’s Early Years and Personal Life

Anna Quindlen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1952. Her mother was Italian and her father Irish. She graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1970 and Barnard College in 1974. Today she serves on its Board of Trustees.

She is married to attorney Gerald Krovatin, and they have three children. Quindlen has numerous honorary doctorates and was awarded the University Medal of Excellence from Columbia. She also serves on the Council of the Author’s Guild.

Quindlen’s Novels and Nonfiction

Anna Quindlen has written six novels. Included are One True Thing, Rise and Shine, Blessings, and her latest, Good Dog. Stay. Some of her nonfiction work includes Loud and Clear, Living Out Loud, and How Reading Changed My Life.

Quindlen is the third woman in the history of The New York Times to write a regular column for the Op-Ed page. Her work for the nationally-syndicated “Public and Private” won her the Pulitzer.

  • Victoria Fellow in Contemporary Issues at Rutgers
  • Fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences

Children’s Literature and Hollywood

Amongst her other accomplishments, Anna Quindlen has contributed to children’s literature. The Tree That Came To Stay, published in 1992, and Happily Ever After, published in 1997, are two examples of Quindlen’s wide-ranging talents as a writer. It is the rare writer that excels in multiple genres.

Two of Quindlen’s books have been made into movies. One True Thing was produced in 1998 and starred Meryl Streep, William Hurt, and Renee Zellweger. Black and Blue was produced in 1999. Mary Stuart Masterson played the lead.

Anna Quindlen has contributed to the world. She has spent most of her adult life to date informing and entertaining others. Her conviction and passion are obvious, and the public continues to honor her with a wide readership.
