Writing and Public Speaking as Twin Careers

Writing Often Leads to Opportunities to Speak to Groups of People

Feb 17, 2009 Debbie Roome

Writers are regarded as being authorities on the subjects they write about and are frequently invited to address public gatherings.

Many writers are introverted by nature and prefer their own company. It can be a shock, then, when they are asked to be the guest speaker at a meeting and talk about their writing or life experiences. The important thing to remember is speaking, like writing, is a skill that can be developed and improved.

Reach New People

Some people are not readers and will seldom pick up a magazine or book. A spoken message will be far more effective in their lives. Bear this in mind when approached to speak to a group as it means reaching a whole new category of people.

Seize Opportunities to Speak

Life is an adventure and sharing experiences with others can be fun and fulfilling as well as having the potential to improve and enhance other’s lives. Don’t shy away from opportunities to speak in public as an invitation means the message is worth sharing.

One Engagement Leads to Another

A first invitation will often result in further invitations as the word spreads and people talk. Make sure that an appropriate amount of effort and effort is expended when preparing so the talk is the best it can be.

Writing is Closely Related to Public Speaking

Some writers are actually employed as speech writers and the principles are very similar. A talk needs a beginning that grabs the listener, an interesting middle and a satisfying conclusion. This outline can be applied to technical talks, life stories and anything in between.

Be Expressive when Speaking

There is nothing worse than a talk that is read out in a monotone. Add some expression, move about the platform, inject a few jokes and personal anecdotes and don’t be afraid to pause for a moment. As far as possible, use notes as a back up and memorize the material.

Get Some Training

There are many courses and night classes available to those who need to learn how to speak in public and build confidence. If the thought of speaking in public is intimidating, make use of these resources which include practical applications. They are generally very effective.

Words Have Influence

Never forget that words have influence. Lives can be shaped and changed by simple words. Make every effort to use opportunities wisely and bring positive, confident words as opposed to words of defeat and failure. There is already enough of those in the world.

Writing is a door of entry to people’s lives and the opportunity to speak in public is another. Take hold of every opportunity and be prepared to share personal stories as well as expertise in given areas. The rewards can be great, not just financially but in the knowledge that lives are being affected by well chosen words.
